Safe Space Manual Development Workshop
On February 11, 2025, a key meeting took place between the Implementing Partner (IP) and the State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) Team to discuss community engagement strategies. It was decided that community engagement would follow the development of the Safe Space Training Manual, which would be presented to the community for validation after its draft was completed.
A planning meeting was also held to prepare for the development of the manual, where the IP presented a concept note and a list of participants, including experts from various sectors like education, health, GBV, and legal practitioners. This diverse representation ensured the manual would be comprehensive and relevant.
The Safe Space Training Manual Development Workshop took place over three days, aiming to create a structured and culturally appropriate manual for adolescent girls in Kwara State, addressing life skills, reproductive health, nutrition, and GBV prevention. The workshop incorporated insights from multiple stakeholders to ensure the manual's effectiveness.
Day 1: The workshop began with presentations on the AGILE project and the 2025 Adolescent Research Report, highlighting issues such as declining school enrollment for girls, GBV underreporting, and barriers like early marriage and financial constraints. The draft training manual was reviewed, and stakeholders suggested improvements, including adding pictorial elements, emphasizing the importance of female teachers in rural schools, and addressing the needs of adolescents with disabilities.
Day 2: Key revisions included incorporating career development, peacebuilding, and trauma management into the life skills module. The GBV module was expanded to address child marriage, school-based sexual exploitation, and the importance of prosecuting perpetrators. The environmental awareness section was simplified, and stakeholders suggested using videos for better impact.
Day 3: The final day focused on refining the manual, including improvements to fact sheets, learning charts, and the life skills module. Adjustments were made to enhance clarity, inclusivity, and practical application, with some redundant content removed.
The workshop successfully advanced the development of a training manual tailored to the needs of adolescent girls, ensuring its cultural relevance, accessibility, and comprehensive approach.
